Your outcome depends on your provider’s experience.
Dr. Harrell has been placing and restoring dental implants in Charlotte‘s Ballantyne area for more than 25 years.
In that time, he has placed thousands of implants, built an on-site dental lab, assembled a practice around implant dentistry specifically, and developed a reputation for doing the work personally — from the first 3D scan through final restoration delivery.

The Path to Implant Dentistry
When I was a kid, I was fascinated with how things worked. I loved working with my hands and used to take things apart — first toys, then computers, then cars. I have also been drawn to art all my life. I knew early on that whatever I did for work would have to involve all of that: my hands, my curiosity, my eye for aesthetics, and my genuine interest in people. Dentistry turned out to be the place where those things come together most naturally.
I am a native of North Carolina and proud to have done my training at the dental school in Chapel Hill. After graduating in 1996, I had a choice most new dentists do not think to make: rather than jump straight into practice, I joined the U.S. Public Health Service as a commissioned officer and headed to New Mexico to work in a dental clinic on the Navajo reservation. I got several years’ worth of clinical experience in that single year — the kind of volume and variety that you simply cannot replicate in a traditional early-career setting. It shaped how I work and how I think about patient care.
When I returned to Charlotte, my wife Lisa — who is a dental hygienist — and I established Adult Dentistry of Ballantyne in 1999. A few years later, we started our family. Lisa and I are fortunate to have three children who make life busy, loud, and genuinely fun. I hope one day one of them joins me in dentistry — that is a few years off yet, so we will have to wait and see.
How Dr. Harrell Approaches Every Case
Over 25 years of practice, there are a few things that have not changed about how Dr. Harrell approaches the work.
Continuous Learning
Continuing education is not a checkbox for Dr. Harrell — it is a consistent part of how he practices. He typically takes three to four times the required annual continuing education hours and has studied with some of the most respected educators in implant and restorative dentistry.
Continuing education is not a checkbox for Dr. Harrell — it is a consistent part of how he practices. He typically takes three to four times the required annual continuing education hours and has studied with some of the most respected educators in implant and restorative dentistry: Dawson, Misch, Strupp, and Spears. His view is simple: you never stop learning, and what you learn directly benefits the patients in the chair next week.
Technology as a Clinical Tool
Dr. Harrell is self-described as fanatical about technology — he has been an early adopter of virtually every meaningful advancement in dental technology over the past 25 years, including 3D CBCT imaging, digital surgical guides, and on-site digital impression systems.
Dr. Harrell is self-described as fanatical about technology — he has been an early adopter of virtually every meaningful advancement in dental technology over the past 25 years. In practice that means 3D CBCT imaging that maps bone anatomy in precise detail before any incision is made, digital surgical guides fabricated from that imaging data that control the exact depth and angle of every implant placed, and digital impression systems that feed directly into The Natural Smile Lab on-site.
One Doctor, Every Case
At Harrell Dental Implant Center, Dr. Harrell evaluates every patient personally, designs every treatment plan, places every implant, and oversees every restoration — from the first 3D scan through final crown delivery.
At Harrell Dental Implant Center, Dr. Harrell evaluates every patient personally, designs every treatment plan, places every implant, and oversees every restoration through The Natural Smile Lab — on-site. That continuity is not common in implant dentistry, particularly at practices that handle volume. For the patient, it means the person who reviewed your 3D scan is the same person placing your implant and approving your final crown.
Honesty About What Is Possible
Dr. Harrell’s philosophy on consultations is simple: give every patient an honest picture of what is possible, what it will take, and what it will cost — then let them decide, with no pressure and no commitment required.
Dr. Harrell’s philosophy on consultations is the same whether the outcome is simple or complex: give the patient an honest picture of what is possible, what it will take, and what it will cost — then let them decide. There is no pressure, no upselling, and no commitment required on the day of the consultation. His practice has been built entirely on patients who came in for a conversation and left with a clear plan they felt good about.
The Natural Smile Lab — On-Site at Harrell Dental Implant Center
One of the most meaningful things Dr. Harrell has built over 25 years is The Natural Smile Lab — a fully equipped dental lab operating on-site at Harrell Dental Implant Center. Most implant practices send their restorations to outside labs, where they are produced to specification and returned for placement. Dr. Harrell reviews every restoration in progress in the lab down the hall, adjusting color, contour, and proportion until the result is right — not just adequate.
For patients, this means the crown or arch they receive is the product of direct oversight from the dentist who placed their implants — not a remote fabrication process disconnected from their clinical history. It is a level of quality control that is genuinely uncommon, and it shows in the results.
It is our mission to restore hope, to fulfill dreams, and to transform the lives and smiles of the good people who seek our care. Our team will treat every person with kindness, humility, and compassion. We will deliver excellence in everything we do.
Dr. Harrell’s practice philosophy has stayed consistent across 25 years and two practices. It is not complicated: use his skills to help people who need and want dental care, do the work with honesty and precision, and treat every patient the way he would want a member of his family treated.
His favorite quote is from former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz: “There is never a wrong time to do the right thing, and never a right time to do the wrong thing.” That principle runs through every aspect of how the practice operates — from the materials used in every restoration to the way consultations are conducted to the terms of the Harrell Confidence Guarantee.
Harrell Dental Implant Center is a no-judgment practice. Whatever the current condition of your teeth or however long you have been living with the situation, Dr. Harrell’s approach is the same: assess honestly, build a realistic plan, and take it one step at a time from wherever you are now.
“Smile. It will make you feel better. I promise.” — Dr. Harrell
