You Have Questions.
Here Is What to Expect.
The process should not feel mysterious. This page walks you through exactly what happens — every appointment, every milestone, every phase of healing.
The decision to get dental implants is personal. At Harrell Dental Implant Center, Dr. Robert L. Harrell, DDS personally guides every patient through each step — so you can move forward with clarity, not uncertainty.
The Implant Process, Start to Finish
The Dental Implant Process
Six steps from your first conversation to a result designed to last. Every patient moves through this same careful sequence — and Dr. Harrell is personally involved at every stage.
Your Free Consultation
This is not a sales meeting. It is a clinical evaluation — thorough, unhurried, and designed to give you real answers. Dr. Harrell personally conducts every consultation, because the person planning your treatment should be the person who already understands your mouth.
- 3D CBCT scan for a complete view of your bone structure, nerve pathways, and sinus proximity
- Comprehensive assessment of bone density, gum health, and any existing dental work
- Full medical history review to identify any factors that may affect healing
- An honest conversation about what is realistic for your situation
Treatment Planning and Lab Preparation
Once you decide to move forward, the precision work begins. Dr. Harrell takes digital impressions of your mouth and works with our in-house ceramist team to plan every detail of your restoration before surgery day arrives.
- Digital impressions replace messy traditional molds with accurate, comfortable scans
- A custom surgical guide is fabricated to position each implant with millimeter-level accuracy
- The Natural Smile Dental Lab, located on-site, begins designing your restoration before surgery — not after
- Because the lab is in-house, Dr. Harrell and the ceramist collaborate directly, with no delays and no miscommunication
Implant Placement Surgery
Surgery day is carefully planned so there are no surprises. You arrive knowing exactly what will happen, how long it will take, and how you will feel. Most patients tell us the experience was easier than they expected.
- You arrive, get settled, and your sedation or anesthesia is administered before any clinical work begins
- Sedation options range from local anesthesia to IV sedation with Dr. Michael Atwood, a board-certified anesthesiologist who is present throughout
- Duration depends on case complexity — a single implant may take under an hour; a full-arch case may take several hours
- For All-on-4 patients: a set of provisional teeth is placed the same day, so you leave with a functional smile
Healing and Osseointegration
After surgery, your body does remarkable work. The titanium implant and your jawbone gradually fuse together through a natural process called osseointegration. This biological bond is what gives dental implants their strength and durability — and it cannot be rushed.
- Healing typically takes three to six months, depending on your bone density and overall health
- You are not without teeth during this time — provisional restorations keep you functional and presentable throughout
- The first week or two involves a soft-food diet and some activity restrictions, but most patients return to normal routines quickly
- Scheduled check-in appointments allow Dr. Harrell to monitor progress and confirm integration is on track
Your Final Restoration
Once healing is confirmed, it is time for the finished work. New impressions or digital scans are taken, and The Natural Smile Lab fabricates your permanent crown, bridge, or full-arch restoration with the same precision that went into the surgical plan.
- Final scans capture your healed anatomy for a precise fit
- The ceramist team matches the shade, translucency, and contour of your natural teeth — or creates the smile you have always wanted
- Dr. Harrell personally reviews every restoration for color, shape, and occlusion before it is placed
- At your final appointment, the restoration is seated and your treatment is complete
Ongoing Care
Dental implants are designed to be low-maintenance. Caring for them looks a lot like caring for natural teeth — regular brushing, flossing, and periodic cleanings. There is no special equipment required and no complicated routine to learn.
- Brush twice daily, floss once daily — the same habits your dentist has always recommended
- Regular professional cleanings, typically every six months
- Periodic check-ups to confirm the implant, bone, and soft tissue remain healthy
- Your result is backed by the Harrell Confidence Guarantee — our written commitment to the longevity of your treatment
How the Process Differs
The six-step framework above applies to every implant case. But timeline, number of appointments, and certain clinical details vary depending on which treatment is right for you.
Single Tooth
The most straightforward path. One implant, one crown. Fewest appointments, shortest overall timeline. Many patients are back to full function within a few months of placement.
Learn moreImplant Bridge
Replaces two or more adjacent teeth using two implants with a bridge spanning between them. Similar in process to a single implant, with one additional restoration step.
Learn moreAll-on-4 Full Arch
The most compressed timeline. Four implants support a full arch of teeth, and a provisional set is placed the same day as surgery. You walk in without teeth and walk out with them.
Learn moreSnap-On Dentures
Implants are placed and allowed to heal, then a custom denture is fabricated to snap securely onto the implants. Removable for cleaning, stable for eating and speaking.
Learn moreComplex Cases
If bone grafting, sinus lifts, or a staged surgical approach is needed, the overall timeline extends — but the fundamental process remains the same. Preparation steps are added before implant placement.
Learn moreRecovery, Honestly
Every patient heals differently, and we will not make promises about your specific experience. What we can do is tell you what the majority of our patients report — and be available when you need us.
Single implant: 2 to 3 days for most patients. Full arch: 3 to 5 days. Many patients return sooner, but we recommend giving yourself room to rest.
Single implant: Soft foods for 1 to 2 weeks. Full arch: Soft foods for several weeks, gradually reintroducing firmer textures as healing progresses.
Light activity can resume within a few days. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and high-impact activity should be avoided for 1 to 2 weeks.
Most patients describe post-operative discomfort as more manageable than they anticipated. Over-the-counter medication handles it for many. Prescription options are available if needed.

Your Questions, Answered
These are the questions we hear most often about the implant process. For a complete list, visit our full FAQ page.
For a single implant, the full journey from consultation to final crown typically spans four to seven months, with most of that time spent in the healing phase. All-on-4 full arch cases follow a similar overall timeline, though you receive provisional teeth on surgery day. Complex cases requiring bone grafting may add several months to the front end. Dr. Harrell will give you a specific timeline at your free consultation.
In most cases, no. All-on-4 patients receive a provisional arch the same day as surgery. Single implant and bridge patients may have a temporary restoration or healing cap in place during osseointegration. Dr. Harrell plans each case to minimize any gap in appearance or function.
Some single-implant patients do return to desk work the following day. However, we recommend at least two to three days off for a single implant and three to five days for full-arch cases. If your work involves physical activity, you may need additional time. Every patient heals at a different rate.
If your 3D scan reveals insufficient bone density, a bone grafting procedure may be recommended before implant placement. The graft typically needs three to six months to mature before the implant can be placed. This adds time to the overall process but does not change the fundamental steps — it simply adds a preparation phase at the beginning.
Yes. We offer a range of sedation options including local anesthesia, oral sedation, and IV sedation administered by Dr. Michael Atwood, a board-certified anesthesiologist. The right choice depends on your comfort level, anxiety, and the complexity of your case. This is discussed in detail at your consultation.
