What are dental implants?
Dental implants as we know them today were invented in 1952 by a Swedish orthopedic surgeon named Per-Ingvar Brånemark. Today, they are considered the standard of care for prosthetic replacement of missing teeth in dentistry. A dental implant is a surgical fixture that is placed into the jawbone and allowed to fuse with the bone over the span of a few months. The dental implant acts as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. In turn, this “artificial tooth root” serves to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Having a dental implant fused to the jawbone is the closest thing to mimicking a natural tooth because it stands on its own without affecting the nearby teeth and has great stability. The process of fusion between the dental implant and jawbone is called “osseointegration.” Learn more, compliments of Medicine Net

Time Frame
The average life span of a bridge, with proper oral hygiene, is eight to 15 years. Dental implants are considered permanent, although any crowns or bridges attached to them are subject to normal wear and tear and may need to be replaced at some point. Proper oral hygiene is crucial to the success of any restorative dental work.
Potential
With a dental implant, the jawbone is stimulated during chewing. This may prevent loss and shrinkage of the jawbone. Medical studies are being conducted to determine the potential for placing dental implants in patients with osteoporosis. When insufficient bone is present to place an implant, bone grafts may allow sufficient bone to develop. Read about more dental implant benefits, compliments of Healthfully

Mini Dental Implants
Mini dental implants have the same structure as regular implants, but are slightly smaller in form. These mini implants have two parts as described by the Mini Dental Implant Centers of America (MDICA): a titanium post with a ball on the end, and a socket with a rubber O-ring that attaches the tooth to the post.
According to Dennis Flanagan, DDS and Andrea Mascolo, DDS in the Journal of Oral Implantology, regular implants are 3.4 to 5.8 mm wide, but mini implants are 1.8 to 3.3 mm in diameter and 10 to 15 mm long.
What They Can Replace
Mini implants support most types of replacement teeth. The MIDCA points to dentures, bridges and fixed crowns, but the American Academy of Implant Dentistry says mini implants are also suitable for securing loose and lower arch dentures.
